Barnes & Noble on Tuesday trumpeted that the SONY NP-FM500H Battery on its new Nook electronic reader lasts two months on a single charge. On paper, that is twice as much as the advertised one-month CANON BP-511 battery life of the Nook’s biggest competitor, the Amazon Kindle.
But questions have been raised about that comparison.
Some publications, including ZDNet, said Barnes & Noble’s NIKON CoolPix S Series S200 battery-life estimates were based on a scenario in which a person read on the Nook for 30 minutes a day, with WiFi turned off. Amazon’s calculations were based on someone reading the Kindle 60 minutes a day with WiFi off.
That would suggest that the two gadgets have the same CASIO NP-40 battery life–or at least Amazon seems to think so. Hours after Barnes & Noble revealed the new Nook, Amazon updated the Kindle’s product description–doubling its SONY NP-BG1 Battery life, using the 30-minute-a-day formula.
“A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off based upon a half-hour of daily reading time,” reads the Amazon product description. “If you read for one hour a day, you will get Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP2 battery life of up to one month.”
But Barnes & Noble says its Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP2 battery life comparison was based on another sort of measurement.
While reading at one page a minute, the new Nook NIKON D50 battery lasts for 150 hours where the Kindle MINOLTA NP-200 battery, using the same page-turn rate, lasts for only 56 hours, said Jamie Iannone, president of Barnes & Noble’s digital products unit, in a statement issued Wednesday. The company has also done a continuous page turn test and at one page turn per second, the new Nook offers more than 25,000 continuous page turns on a single charge, he said. (All the tests were done with Wi-Fi off.)
“In our side-by-side tests, under the exact same conditions, continuous use of the device resulted in more than two times Kindle’s CASIO NP-20 battery life,” Iannone said.
The CANON LP-E8 battery -life battle comes as the major e-reader makers release newer, cheaper devices. The new Nook costs $139 and has a black-and-white touch screen and Wi-Fi access. Amazon on Tuesday also started selling a new version of its 3G-enabled Kindle, which is identical to the current model except that is $25 cheaper because it comes with on-screen ads.
Kobo, a Canadian company, earlier this week also announced a new WiFi-enabled touch-screen device for $129.99.

How Long Does a Cell Phone Battery Charge Last and Last Longer?
While many of us now use mobile phones in place of land-line phones in our homes, the primary benefit of mobile phones remains their portability.Cell phones are powered by batteries that require regular recharges. The amount of time you use your phone and the number of applications it executes will all affect how long a Canon LP-E8 battery will last before it has to be recharged.
Cell Phone Power
1. All cell phones depend on a lithium ion battery to operate. Batteries are rechargeable and must be plugged in after the drain for the phone to operate. Lithium ion Casio NP-120 Battery have a shelf life and are only good for a certain number of charges, but most phones will last for 18 months to 3 years, depending on use.
Standby Charge
2. A phone on standby can last for upward of 3 days, depending on the type of phone and applications packed onto it. Standby is the time you are not actively talking or using the phone, you simply have it on. The older a phone gets, the shorter the standby time will get but new phones appear to be averaging around 2 to 5 days of standby.
Official Talk Time
3. Official talk time refers to the amount of time the phone can be used for talking before the battery will be drained completely. Newer phone models often offer high talk-time charges. Most new model phones offer roughly between 5 to 7 hours of official talk time per charge. The official talk time also includes time used on other applications, including text messaging and picture taking.
Phone Applications
4. Phone application can drain a Fujifilm FinePix Z35 Charger battery much more quickly than the advertised talk times. Using the Internet, playing video games or playing videos/music will lead to a quicker battery drain time.
Age of Battery
5. Some people find that as a phone ages, the cell phone battery will die more and more quickly; the phone must be recharged more often. This is due to the breakdown of the lithium ion battery. A battery will begin to lose the ability to charge after about 18 months of daily use.
some tips for you to Make Your Cell Phone Battery Last Longer
1.Turn the phone off. This is probably the most effective and most simple way of conserving your battery’s power. If you don’t plan on answering the phone while you’re sleeping or after business hours, just turn it off. Do the same if you are in an area with no reception (such as a subway or remote area, since constantly searching for service depletes the battery fairly quickly. Some phones have an automatic power save feature, but it takes about 30 minutes with no service to kick in. By then, much battery power has been used.
2.Gemini mobile Phone Booster that Works on All Carriers
Stop searching for a signal. When you are in an area with poor or no signal, your phone will constantly look for a better connection, and will use up all your power doing so. This is easily understood if you have ever forgotten to turn off your phone on a flight. The best way to ensure longer battery life is to make sure you have a great signal where you use your phone. If you don’t have a perfect signal, get a cell phone repeater which will amplify the signal to provide near perfect reception anywhere.

3.Switch off the vibrate function on your phone, and use just the ring tone instead. The vibrate function uses up a lot of battery power. Keep the ring tone volume as low as possible.
4.Turn off your phone’s back light when not in use.
Turn off your phone’s back light. The back light is what makes the phone easier to read in bright light or outside. However, the light also uses Sony NP-FH50 Battery power. If you can get by without it, your battery will last longer. If you have to use the back light, many phones will let you set the amount of time to leave the back light on. Shorten that amount of time. Usually, one or two seconds will be sufficient. Some phones have an ambient light sensor, which can turn off the back light in bright conditions and enable it in darker ones.
5.Avoid using unnecessary features. If you know it will be a while before your phone’s next charge, don’t use the camera or connect to the Internet. Flash photography can drain your battery especially quickly.

6.Keep calls short. This is obvious, but how many times have you heard someone on their mobile phone say, “I think my battery’s dying,” and then continue their conversation for several minutes? Sometimes, the dying battery is just an excuse to get off the phone (and a good one, at that), but if you really need to conserve the battery, limit your talk time.
7.Turn off Bluetooth. It will drain your battery very quickly.
8.Same goes for WIFI, GPS, and infrared capabilities, if your phone has these features built in. Keep them off; save more power.
9.Use GSM – Using your phone in 3G / Dual Mode will drain the Samsung PL70 Charger battery quicker than if you just use GSM mode – have a look at your phones spec and you’ll see it will quote two different battery life times – normally 50% more for pure GSM use.

SOURCE celebrates CWU students' work
The scholarly work of Central Washington University students, from human-powered generators and early American cuisine to a discovery of laser emissions and experiments with hookworms, will be displayed and celebrated Thursday.
The 16th annual Symposium on University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE) is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center at CWU.
SOURCE provides a forum for sharing and celebrating student work with the campus and Ellensburg community. The work will be displayed in a variety of ways, including oral and poster presentations, artwork and performances.
This year more than 580 people are scheduled to present about 150 oral presentations, 18 creative expression presentations and 138 poster presentations, including 11 on university satellite campuses.
In addition to the presentations will be a student fashion show, a business plan competition, saxophone and clarinet performances and a tour of a portable version of the Digital Visualization Laboratory (DVL) proposed for Science Phase II.
For a complete program and schedule of presentations, visit www.buy-laptop-battery.org/~source.
Human-powered
CWU junior Garrett Griffith, from Bothell, is one of many students set to present their work at SOURCE. Griffith has come up with a bright idea that any cell phone owner can appreciate.
Griffith has created a human-powered electrical generator capable of charging a variety of small, personal electronics, while also powering a video display, according to a news release from CWU.
The goal of the project, Griffith says, is “creating a self-powered demonstration system where students can plug in a charger to top off their iPod or cell phone dell inspiron 1525 battery charge using power they can generate themselves.”
Griffith modified a bicycle training stand to accept a belt-driven 300-watt DC generator — used to charge a 12-volt automotive hp pavilion zv5000 battery— and added system components to control the charge to the Acer aspire one 10.1 battery and record power supplied from the generator, the release said.
The user pedals the bicycle to generate power. The average person can sustain power output of 100 watts. Using Griffith’s bicycle generator, a five-watt cell phone Acer aspire 3000 battery can be charged in about five minutes, and a laptop battery ( dell inspiron 1545 battery ) in about an hour.
Griffith hopes his project will “plant seeds of interest regarding energy conservation.”
Serving up history
Graduate student Karen Bailor, from Wenatchee, is investigating history with a tasty twist. The award-winning research for her thesis, “Cooking Up a Nation: Food, Culture, and Identity in the Early American Republic,” explores the ways cuisine changed to reflect American values in the post-revolutionary period. Her research will also be displayed at SOURCE.
Bailor, who has a dual passion for cooking and history, was fascinated by the topic of historical cuisine and decided to make it the focus of her graduate thesis, according to a university news release.
“I wanted to research why Americans ate what they ate,” she said in the release. (dell 6y270 battery )“While American hearth, home and table generally became more refined as the American people struggled for more respectable lives, the food that was served on those tables took on uniquely democratic values, embracing simplicity, equality and a deep connection to the land.”
For example, “election cakes” became a tradition of the public democratic process. (hp pavilion dv6000 ac adapter)Though recipes vary, election cakes were always produced in large quantities and acted as a unifying element at public democratic events, the release said.
By the 19th century, election cakes became a symbol of democracy and represented the freedom and independence bound up in the right to vote.
“These cakes became part of a uniquely American public culture as they symbolized American democracy, and ultimately, American nationhood,” Bailor said.
Bailor was recently awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship Award from Central’s College of Arts and Humanities for a chapter of her thesis. She is in her second year of graduate study, and also completed her undergraduate work at Central, with a major in history and minor in literature.

Camera Has an Eye for Photos, Brain for Wi-Fi
The pocket-size, point-and-shoot digital camera was once a standard part of many consumers' electronic tool kit. But it has been challenged by smartphones with better and better built-in cameras and photo apps. While they lack some photographic capabilities, like physical zoom lenses, phones are carried everywhere all the time. Plus, they are wirelessly connected to email and the Web, where digital pictures often wind up.
I've been testing the SH100. It carries a list price of $200 without a memory card but can be found at various merchants for as little as $150. Its wireless capability requires no contract or monthly payment.
My verdict is that the SH100 pretty much does what it promises as a wireless device, and takes very good photos and videos. Unlike on a cellphone, its wireless functions don't work almost everywhere. Still, for those who would like some of the wireless ease of a phone in a better camera, it might be tempting.
The SH100 is a good-looking, pocket camera with a resolution of 14.2 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom and a wide-angle lens. Smartphones typically have much lower resolution and lack optical zoom lenses.
It has a large, 3-inch touch screen on the back, for framing and viewing shots, and for controlling its many functions. There are only four physical buttons—a home button, a power button, a playback button, and a combination shutter and zoom controller. Everything else is controlled by tapping on icons and menus on the screen.
This was my biggest gripe about the SH100. In my tests, using its screen required extra pressure, multiple presses and corrections. Samsung implicitly acknowledges this by including a plastic stylus with the camera. Using the stylus makes things easier, but it's another thing to carry and seems easy to lose.
Samsung says the SH100 is mainly about connectivity, and its photographic capabilities and features aren't significantly different from those on its other point-and-shoot models. In my tests, it took sharp, vivid photos and videos, indoors and out. It has all the standard settings and effects I've seen in other point-and-shoot cameras, including auto and more manual modes, and various preconfigured settings for scenarios such as sunsets or beach photos.
One of its nicer features is something called Magic Frame, which merges a photo you take with a background. For instance, it can place your photo in a poster on the side of a bus-stop shelter, or on the screen of an old black-and-white TV. It also has a 3-D carousel view for browsing through your photos, and another mode where you can flip through pictures by tilting the camera.
But there were some issues. In one instance, during a meeting with Samsung officials to show me the camera, it wouldn't work with my office Wi-Fi, though my test unit later did fine in the office. Also, when uploading to Facebook, the camera installs a Facebook app called MashupSocial, which you may or may not want.
More important, the camera's Wi-Fi won't work with many commercial Wi-Fi hot spots, such as those in coffee shops or airports, that require a login process via a browser, because it lacks a browser. To compensate, Samsung includes a free three-month trial subscription to Boingo, a service that automates logins to some of these services. After the trial ends, Boingo costs $8 a month, but it is optional.
Also, the camera can't automatically send any photo you snap. You can only choose to send photos when you are in playback mode. And this is a manual process. You also can't queue up photos you take outside of W-Fi range for later instant uploading when you get near a compatible Wi-Fi network.
To save OLYMPUS AZ-1 battery life, the camera doesn't remain connected to Wi-Fi. It connects only when you choose to transmit, and then disconnects. This is a relatively slow process. Samsung says the SH100's CANON NB-1LH battery can shoot more than 200 pictures on a single charge, but that PANASONIC camera battery life degrades if you use Wi-Fi a lot.
I also successfully tested a couple of other wireless features. I was able to wirelessly transmit photos from the camera to a Windows PC using a special Samsung computer program called Auto Backup. (This doesn't work on Macs.) I also was able to use a feature called Remote Viewfinder that lets you control the camera remotely from a Samsung smartphone. The camera can also wirelessly beam photos to a compatible TV, but I wasn't able to test this.
If you're willing to accept the wireless limitations of the SH100, and value its photographic advantages compared to a phone's camera, it might offer the right balance for you.

Now, Samsung has introduced a pocket camera that aims to erode the advantages of smartphones—even though the company also produces phones. This new camera, the SH100, has Wi-Fi built in. This isn't the first camera with built-in Wi-Fi, but Samsung hopes to better capitalize on it. It also competes with the add-on memory card called Eye-Fi, that brings Wi-Fi abilities to almost any camera. It has easy, preconfigured uploading to Facebook, YouTube, Picasa, email and other online destinations, plus a bunch of added wireless features, including cordless transfer of photos to a PC.

The SH100 has zoom and wide-angle lenses.
The user interface has been designed to resemble the array of apps on a smartphone. Unfortunately, the SH100 uses a less expensive, and much less responsive, type of touch screen than is typically found on smartphones. So, tapping on icons, scrolling through menus and, especially, typing email addresses and wireless login details, can be a frustrating process for people trained now to use sensitive phone and tablet screens.

The SH100 has a touch screen on the back for viewing photos and controlling functions.
But I mainly tested the camera as a wireless device, with mixed results. I was able to connect almost every time to noncommercial Wi-Fi networks in my home and office, and was easily able to post pictures to my accounts on Facebook and Picasa, and videos to my YouTube account. I also was easily able to email photos. This required a one-time setup process for each online account.

Sony Ericsson unveiled the follow-up models to last year's Xperia X10 Mini and Xperia X10 Mini Pro today, refreshing the pair with Gingerbread and improved specifications. Due later this year, both handsets feature a 3-inch touch display, 5-megapixel camera, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. As was the case with the first generation of these Xperia phones, the primary difference between the two is that the Mini Pro features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, whereas the Mini is touch only. Additionally, the Mini Pro adds a front-facing VGA camera and a pair of business-minded apps: Office Suite and McAfee Antivirus.
At first glance, these new handsets look nearly identical to their predecessors, but there are plenty of subtle differences. The screen size has been bumped up ever so slightly from 2.55 inches to 3 inches, adding Sony's Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine for good measure.
Further, the 5-megapixel camera is now capable of recording 720p HD video, a point Sony is quick to promote. As it stands today, the Xperia Mini is the smallest Android phone in the world able to record video in high definition.

Sony Ericsson has also revised the user experience for both phones, allowing for up to 16 app shortcuts on their home screens. What's more, a new application, Facebook inside Xperia, provides quick access to sharing, liking, and commenting from various places within the phone. The camera battery has been improved for the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro, adding upwards of 30 percent more life. While I don't anticipate gamers and heavy users to flock to either of these phones, there's nothing wrong with a little extra juice at the end of the day. Both phones are expected to debut in the Q3 of 2011 across various global markets. Look for pricing to be unveiled later this summer as select carriers are announced.

Household battery recycling made easier in California
Thanks to a grant from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) is making it easier for consumers to recycle household CANON EOS 5D battery. Since 2006, the State of California has banned disposal of these types of batteries in the trash. The SGVCOG is creating a program for consumers to support proper CANON BP-511 battery recycling and management by providing convenient drop-off locations throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
In preparation for the launch of a pilot CANON LP-E5 battery take-back program, SGVCOG conducted focus groups and phone survey research of San Gabriel Valley residents in 2010 that revealed more people would recycle household hazardous materials if recycling were more convenient. Research findings include:
- Only 59 percent of those surveyed were aware of the FUJIFILM NP-40 battery disposal ban.
- 56 percent of respondents still dispose of batteries in the trash.
- Residents stated that they continued to dispose of CASIO NP-60 battery in the trash despite knowing about the disposal ban because recycling was so inconvenient.
Since the current system was clearly not working, the residents were surveyed on possible alternatives and 85 percent indicated that they are likely to participate in a retailer take-back program for used batteries and lamps, which led the SGVCOG to develop a take-back program.
The SGVCOG pilot SONY NP-BG1 battery take-back program will provide convenient drop off locations for consumers in the San Gabriel Valley by partnering with local businesses to provide collection services. Participating businesses display an identifying sticker in their window and place a collection box, provided by SGVCOG, within their store where consumers can properly dispose of non-working NIKON EN-EL3E battery. This program is the first to collaborate with local retailers in the area and identify best practices that other local governments can implement.
The collection sites range from grocery stores to camera shops throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
