Macbook battery won't take a charge after sitting for an extended period of time

I recently left my macbook for approximately 10 days thinking it was off. Well to my surprise it wasn't and now it seems the battery has completely drained and will no longer take a charge

I've tried shutting down, and resetting the PMU neither made any difference.

Any suggestions?

According to Apple you should never leave your dell inspiron 9200 battery in your Mac for extended periods of time without charging it.

If you do not use it for a week, they recommend to fully charge the battery and pull it out of the Mac and store them separated. then run a charge cycle once every few weeks (about 3 to 4 weeks).

Tech support told me that if you let the dell 310-6321 battery fully drain until all the power runs out you can actually "kill the battery" because it damages the circuitry. In this case your battery warranty is void.

I am sure there are ways to go around it and get a replacement. I would consult with your local Genius bar guy or local tech support store.

I took my macbook into the Genius bar this morning. Not only was my computer not under warranty, but the problem with my battery did not call for a free battery replacement (since it was admittedly my fault.) I think the guy felt bad for me so he gave me a new one and filed it as a faulty battery.

I took my macbook pro to a authorized service because wasn't starting at all, the chinese told me that's the  Dell 310-6321 battery fault and I have to change it, also the main board, he replaced the mainboard but not the battery so I went to buy a new one, I've put the new battery but now near the clock on right corner my battery is marked with an X as it's not there, if I don't keep it pluged in it won't start, the led on charger is green for a few moments then is turning off leaving me with the computer on but without charging. Anyway now is not taking dvds either so I'm starting to hate mac book.

in my case, the Hp Pavilion dv9000 Battery stopped taking charge after 2.5 years and eventually ran out of power and the macbook will only work when plugged in. I bought a new battery but that ran out of power and I still trying to figure out this problem. Why does it insist that there is no battery installed? I notice that when the battery is nearly flat, the first led flashes but when it is dead flat, no leds light up all. I really like Macs but this is unacceptable... the power supply works and the battery works but the macbook is preventing the battery from charging! Anyone know any other way of charging a macbook battery?

Same problem. This is the third major problem I have had with the MacBook. The first was a dead optical drive after 6 months. The second was a dead hard drive after 13 months. The hard drive was replaced by the authorized repair service Apple sent me to. Apple representatives promised to reimburse me for the cost of retrieving the lost data. They reneged on the promise. Many calls and emails got me no where. I was so disgusted I stopped using the MacBook and instead used a cheaper (about 1/4 the price) Toshiba laptop that has proved to be much more durable. Yesterday I decided to give the MacBook another try and found the hp pavilion dv9000 battery problem. Any suggestions?

I've just had this problem for the second time - that if the battery fully discharges, eg by leaving the Mac in sleep mode but not connected to power for a few days, then it will no longer recharge. The first time it happened, I got a replacement Hp Pavilion dv6000 Battery under warranty. That was a couple of years ago and exactly the same thing has happened again. I'll try taking it to an Apple store, but from the comments from the rest of you, I suspect they will make me buy an expensive new battery, even though this is clearly some kind of design fault.

I suspect it is a fault in the battery firmware, but I haven't been able to confirm this through web search. Like a lot of the other posters here, my  hp pavilion dv6000 battery is one of these:

This isn't a case of gradual disintegration of an old battery: it was working perfectly one week and now it doesn't work at all.

Anyone found a solution?

Mine has just decided to stop charging! It worked perfectly fine this morning then I came home from being out for a few hours and it wouldn't turn on without the power lead. Now it says where the charging icon usually is  toshiba pa3399u-1bas battery not charging if you click on the power icon (if that makes sense). Once the lead was in and it was on i tested and took the lead out and sure enough it turned off.. when I put the lead in the little led display next to the black circle (remote sensor) flashed a couple of times then did the normal light sequence... I'm really annoyed, never really had a problem before and definitely cannot afford a new battery. Help me please!!

my macbook white was produced in 2009 (late) it's an Unibody so i cant remove battery by my self.
i have same problem with  Dell inspiron 1545 battery but for my one different situation has taken place. At first it had stuck at 53% no matter I was charging it or not. after few week it drained fully and for now it shows 0% and works only with Power adapter
i would like to know which part become unstable battery or magsafe which is giving information is there any sensors on a battery?

by the way , I have checked it fully. for what, I have used service software for apple macbooks and it has gave me perfect results no hardware errors .upon the results there is no damaged parts on logic board!
so where is a trues, is this a firmware issue ? which cant be updated because, apple haven't produced it yet

I've replaced the batter twice within the last 3 years of having this mac. Unfortunately I didn't get around to buying the extended warranty. I think this is an issue they don't really want to resolve since it seems to be bringing in a lot of cash flow for them.... I mean seriously why else make the macbook pro's batteries INTERNAL... This mac is used pretty often and charge times are never longer than needed, ie 2-4 hours depending on how long it's been used in a day. Yet I've still had to replace this  Dell inspiron 1545 battery TWICE!.. I would have replaced this unit if my fiance didn't like OSX so much. You've also got to remember that the GENIUS bar isn't run by geniuses. They're just regular people who got a job at a store and train on the spot just like people who work for the geek squad. I know people who are completely incompetent when it comes to tech, yet they are able to get jobs working for the geek squad and apple stores. So keep that in mind, they can only recommend what they know within their scope so don't take out these issues on them. They're just trying to get by like us. Take your anger out on Apple for providing faulty products!...
