(Power Electronics Technology Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) To meet the higher current requirements of next-generation Li-ion-powered equipment, Texas Instruments has introduced a fully integrated Dell inspiron 1501 ac adapter battery protection and cell-balancing solution for high power battery packs. The HP f1739a battery management/protection IC (Fig. 1.) is intended for Cordless Power Tools, Cordless Lawn Equipment, Electric Bikes, UPS, Medical Equipment, and Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs), etc
To see the previous measures employed to protect li-ion Dell xps m1530 ac adapter battery-based systems, we’ll look at the protection circuit for lower power battery packs. This circuit protects the pack and optimizes its service life. It also protects the user against unsafe operating conditions. Typically, these first generation protection circuits: Limit the Dell latitude d630 battery pack’s maximum charge and discharge current, which protects against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcharge current, and overdischarge current.Associated hp pavilion dv6000 ac adapter battery pack usually consists of one to four cells.Usually employ high-side power MOSFET switches on-chip to disconnect the battery pack if there is a fault. These MOSFETs must carry the load current during discharge and charge.Monitor cell temperature to protect against possible hazardous overheating conditions.Ensure complete charging and utilization of the pack without violating safety thresholds.Ideally, should consume minimum current when the Dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery-powered load is turned off. These first generation protection circuits are intended for smartphones, laptop computers, and other portable devices with low to moderate power consumption. These protection circuits usually handle up to a few amps at a steady rate.
Now, a new generation of Li-ion ibm thinkpad t40 battery battery-based equipment can be confronted with loads in tens of amperes. For example, a portable electric power tool like a drill or saw has a very different load profile when compared to a notebook PC. This higher load requires an entirely new type of protection circuit with the appropriate specifications. The protection circuit is embedded within the Sony vgp-bps9 battery pack. Among its characteristics: It must handle very high currents on discharge, and lower currents on charge.Discharge current can cause uneven self-heating of Universal External Battery cells, which can cause an imbalance of cell voltages that make the battery unusable. This requires an ability to monitor the output voltages of all the cells to ensure all support an equal share of the total load.In some applications, the load and ibm thinkpad x40 battery are physically separated, as in the case of a string trimmer where motor is about three feet away. That motor can produce inductive spikes that affect the protection circuit.Power MOSFETs are employed to disconnect the dell inspiron 1545 battery in case of a fault, so they must be sized for the charge and discharge current paths. Primarily, this involves their on-resistance, RDS(ON), that must be low enough to minimize the voltage drop for the expected discharge current. In addition, the MOSFETs must turn off fast if there is a fault.MOSFETs that can operate with the higher discharge currents require gate drives with the appropriate drive current to turn off the MOSFET if there is a fault.Even with the higher current capability, the protection circuitís quiescent current must be as low as possible so that it doesn’t affect fujitsu lifebook c2330 battery life.Meeting the requirements for these high power, battery-based systems is the bq77910 from Texas Instruments. Fig. 2 shows the simplified circuit of the bq77910 that protects high-powered Li-ion battery pack-based equipment. One of this IC’s functions is monitoring individual cell voltages. It also drives two external N-channel power MOSFETs to disconnect the Acer aspire one d250-1042 battery pack during fault conditions. Fault detection and recovery criteria for the device are fully programmable in non-volatile memory, which can suit all types of lithium battery systems.
The bq77910 protection circuit in Fig. 2 has separate negative charge and discharge lines. Separate lines allow the use of a high current MOSFET for discharging (driving the load) and a lower power MOFET for charging the HP pavilion ze4600 ac adapter battery pack.
Features As shown in Fig. 2, individual cell monitoring and balancing cells use integrated FETs that help maximize compaq presario 1200 dc adapter battery pack service life and performance,.Can be configured for operation with packs from 4- to 10- series cells and 50V max input with a 10-cell configuration50 µA typical quiescent current (2.5 µA in shutdown mode) minimizes battery discharge during storage or idle periods, which optimizes battery life.Supports additional lithium hp pavilion dv8000 battery chemistries: Programmable (EEPROM) fault detection thresholds and time delays make the bq77910 adaptable to all variations of lithium systems, including LiCoO2 and LiFePO4.A standalone integrated solution does not require an external controller or processor (such as those employed with some lower power protection circuits). This protection IC also provides all necessary hp pavilion dv9500 ac adapter battery pack protection functions. It operates as a standalone IC using primarily analog circuits to minimize power consumption. It checks: Cell overvoltageCell undervoltageCharge short circuitDischarge short circuit/overcurrentPack temperatureOpen/shorted thermistor (for temperature sensing) detection and open-cell detectionExternal power MOSFET overheatingOther capabilities You can pre-set safety thresholds and time delays (programmed in non-volatile memory) to match any type of Li-Ion compaq presario 1610 dc adapter battery system, such as LiCoO2, LiFePO4, LiMn2O4, etc.The protection circuit can be programmed during pack manufacturing and then can operate as a standalone protector within the pack.Internal high power gate drivers control the external low-side NMOS power switches. Use of external MOSFETs provides a lower on-resistance than integrated, on-chip MOSFETs. This is lower cost and more efficient for high voltage/high current applications.Programmable gain allows accurate current sensing with external 1 mO or 5 mO sense resistor. Fig. 2 has an external 1 mO current sense resistor. The bq77910 implements an internal cell-balance control circuit and power FET structure. High cell count Dell xps m1210 ac adapter battery systems are more likely to see imbalance due to temperature gradients and cell self-heating at high discharge rates.
A fully integrated cell-balancing capability with internal balancing FETs is shown within dashed lines in Fig. 2. Cell balancing is important because mismatched cells internal to the pack affect overall TOSHIBA pa3356u-1bas battery pack performance. And, this cell imbalance can accumulate over time.
Automatic cell balancing uses integrated 50-mA cell circuits.
Balance current must be limited using external resistance.
Resistive component sizes limit the balance current as the return current flows through the 50O resistors. These values are relatively low (to allow sufficient balance current), so it may be necessary to maximize external capacitor sizes, depending on the filtering requirements.(Sony vgp-bps2 battery)
A CPU to control a complex balancing algorithm is not required; instead the bq77910 implements a simple and robust hardware algorithm. It uses a separate comparator to check if cells have reached the balancing threshold to start balancing (i.e., does not use the overvoltage trip comparator). Cell-balancing options are programmable, including balancing threshold, when to balance (always, only during charge, or never), and how long to balance.(compaq presario cq60-100 ac adapter)
A mechanical or assembly fault in the pack can cause a high-impedance or broken connection between the IC cell sense pins and the actual cells. Therefore, the bq77910 periodically checks individual cell voltages by applying a micropower pulsed load across each cell. If the connection between the pin and the cell is open, the IC will detect a fault (permanent failure) condition. The open cell detection reading is taken at a time interval. Because an open-cell fault may be considered as a permanent failure, the fault detection logic must detect two consecutive open-cell conditions before activating the protection condition for an open-cell fault.
Due to the nature of open-cell fault conditions, other apparent faults may be observed during an open-cell condition.(Compaq presario r4065ea battery)
Evaluation Module Also available is a bq77910 evaluation module (EVM) allows testing with different FET and pack configurations (Fig. 3). It can be used to set EEPROM thresholds for fault detection values. GUI software (PC-based) allows easy inspection and programming of fault and recovery thresholds.(dell inspiron 1525 ac adapter)
The bq77910 evaluation module consists of a bq77910 circuit module and a resistor cell simulator module that can be used for simple evaluation of the bq77910 functions. The circuit module includes one bq77910, sense resistor, power FETs and all other onboard components necessary to protect the cells from overcharge, overdischarge, short circuit, and over current discharge in a 10 series cell Li-ion or Li-polymer dell xps m1330 ac adapter battery pack.
The circuit module connects directly across the cells in a hp elitebook 8730w ac adapter battery. With a compatible interface board and Windows™-based PC software, the user can view the bq77910 registers and program the IC configuration and protection limits.

Toshiba Satellite L730 review
This 13.3-inch entertainment laptop is perfect for staving off boredom on the move. The Satellite L730-10G lacks graphical punch, but the compact display is a highlight, while the lightweight body and decent Acer aspire 3000 battery life ensure you'll be entertained wherever you roam.
Despite its smaller screen, the Satellite L730-10G still features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution. The result is a much sharper picture, so images look crisp and clean. It's also a bright and vibrant panel, making this one of the best displays for movie watching.
We enjoyed simply browsing our photo collection and watching films, although the integrated speakers are lacking in power. We recommend you invest in some decent headphones. (Dell inspiron 1525 battery)
Most recent laptops use Intel's latest Sandy Bridge processing technology, but this portable is powered by one of Intel's older Core i3 processors. However, the difference in our benchmarking tests was minimal. If you love to multitask, browsing the web at the same time as you watch a film and chat with friends using messenger applications, then the Samsung can handle it.
Even with a paltry 2GB of memory on board, we witnessed little slowdown while running several tasks at once.
Weak graphics
However, the integrated graphics are quite weak. This means that you can only run the most basic multimedia tasks such as viewing and editing photos, and watching high-definition (HD) films. If you want to mess around with your home movies or play games, you should look at the Acer Aspire 5750G and Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520. (Dell inspiron 15 ac adapter)

The 320GB hard drive provides a standard amount of storage space to carry around your files and media collection. It can hold hundreds of standard-definition films or thousands of albums and photos.
However, some other laptops offer double the space for a similar amount of you hard earned cash. If you need a laptop for the whole family, a larger hard drive is recommended. However, if you need a mobile machine for carrying around all day, the Satellite is a great solution.
With a weight of just 1.9kg, it is technically classed as an ultraportable laptop. Not only is it the lightest machine here, the dell inspiron 1545 battery life is also commendable. We watched movies for almost three hours before the laptop shut itself down, and limiting yourself to more basic entertainment such as browsing the web gives you many hours of life. You certainly won't need to lug the charger around on the daily commute.
The more compact body means that features are a little stingy compared to some of the other laptops here. If you want to hook up a television, you'll have to make do with a VGA connection, as there's no HDMI port.
There's also no memory card reader. However, one of the three USB ports supports sleep-and-charge technology, which means you can charge your mobile devices such as MP3 players even when the laptop is in hibernation.(Dell studio 1737 ac adapter)
You also get built-in hard drive protection, which pauses the drive if vibrations are detected. This reduces the risk of hard drive failure, which could result in lost files.
While the Toshiba may lack graphical power and lots of storage, it's still a good entertainment machine for regular travellers. The sharp and colourful screen is a good way of enjoying movies, while the reduced weight and decent Sony vaio pcg-xr battery life make it an excellent travel companion.

Samsung HMX-Q10 review
The Q10 is a budget camcorder which is designed to be held in either hand - unlike most designs, which are impossible to use left-handed. The hand strap is just a thick rubbery band with an adjustable sliding buckle; it's very neat and when retracted it sits neatly in a recess on the side of the camcorder. (Samsung VP-D20 Battery )
If you turn the camcorder upside down and place the strap around your left hand, the Q10 flips the image to compensate. It's just as comfortable to hold this way round and the circular zoom thumb control works fine either way up. It's not just useful for left-handed users; being able to record with your off-hand is very useful when your other hand is occupied, such as when you're eating a burger or hanging off a cliff. The built in lens cap is operated manually by a switch on the side, as you'd expect at this price. (Canon NB-3L battery)
To use it in your left hand, simply turn the camcorder over
There's no power switch - you turn the camcorder on and off by folding the LCD display in and out. There are very few buttons on the camcorder; just the big record button on the back and a home button by the 2.7in LCD that brings up the main touchscreen menu. (Canon EOS 350D Charger)
The touchscreen menus are a mixed bag. Simple options are clearly presented, but as you get into the settings menus, navigation becomes more difficult. Basic manual controls are provided - you can change white balance and adjust the exposure and focus manually - although adjusting these settings on the touchscreen is fiddly and anyone seriously interested in such manual video recording adjustments should look elsewhere.(Canon NB-5L battery)
The touchscreen menu is simple to use
There's not an awful lot in the video settings section, and we imagine the vast majority of users will stick with the default 1080i setting. You can't adjust the quality - the bitrate is a reasonable 17.2mbit/s, which equates to 125 minutes of playback from a 16GB SDHC card. The SD card and the 1,250mAh Samsung BP70A Battery sit under a flap on the bottom (top if you're left-handed) of the camcorder. You'll get 105 minutes of continuous recording time from the supplied Canon BP-808 Battery, so a second Canon NB-4L battery is probably a good idea, as in practice you'll get around half this amount in day-to-day use
The Q10 has a respectable sounding 1/4in CMOS sensor, but Samsung lists its effective size at just 1/5.8in, which is significantly smaller. On the plus side it's a back-illuminated sensor, where the chip's wiring is behind instead of in front of the photo receptors, so more light can get through. Such sensors have started appearing on mobile phones - Sony's EXMOR R sensor, as found on some Xperia models, is back-illuminated.(Canon LP-E8 battery) However, such sensors tend to have small surface areas, so haven't become common on camcorders as yet.
Image quality is pretty good for a £200 device, with a reasonable amount of detail to images. Despite this, when compared directly to the £300 Canon RF 206's video, the Q10's footage lacks contrast and definition, which can make images appear flat and less lifelike. Colours also looked a little washed out, lacking some of the richness we’ve seen on more expensive models. It turned in better than expected footage in low-light conditions, probably thanks to that back-illuminated sensor, and while there's some obvious noise reduction at work the final effect is still highly watchable.(Nikon EN-EL1 Battery)
Samsung advertises the Q10 as having optical image stabilisation, which is surprising at this price. It turned out to be too good to be true in our image stabilisation test - the Q10's system wasn't much better than digital-only systems at cutting out the shakes. Still handheld footage is fairly steady, but the image can lag behind your movements. (Canon EOS 5D battery )
The Q10 shoots some decent, if not outstanding, video for the money; it's particularly good at turning out less-than-hideous footage in low lighting. That may sound like faint praise, but at only £200 it's pretty impressive. Its ambidextrous design also makes it a handy camcorder. It's more expensive than a Flip-style device, but it does have a 10x zoom and superior video quality.

Toshiba Satellite L755-144 laptop computer with Blu-ray
Computers that can play films from Blu-ray disc are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Take the Toshiba Satellite L755-144, for example, a laptop with a 15.6in widescreen display and a Blu-ray disc drive.(ACER TravelMate 4002 Laptop AC Adapter)
We've seen better screens on laptops but this one, while a little low in resolution, was perfectly useable. The higher the resolution, the sharper the pictures and text on screen, so the slightly low resolution here of 1366x768 pixels meant everything was the tiniest bit blocky when we looked closely, but largely it was fine. Certainly, high-definition video looked fine on it.
It lacks the design flair of its business-minded more expensive brother the Tecra R840 but it shares one nice touch with that laptop, a physical button mounted between the keyboard and the touchpad that allows the touchpad to be disabled. If you are using a plug-in mouse, this prevents the pointer moving around if your fingers accidentally brush the touchpad while you're typing.(Canon hf10 Battery)
The keyboard was too shallow for our liking – the keys didn't travel far enough when pressed but they were large and nicely spaced, and there's enough room in the laptop's 38cm width for a full number keypad to the right of the keyboard. As on many laptops, the space bar was a little small, but it was useable.
It comes with two small speakers that sit above the keyboard, which looked good but produced only so-so sound. Quality was fine, but volume didn't go particularly high and it was lacking in bass, despite coming with the ‘Toshiba Bass Enhanced Sound System'.(TOSHIBA Laptop AC Adapter)
Plenty of computing power is available. The processor is an Intel Core i5-2410M model and it has 6GB of memory. Internet and office tasks posed no problems, and it completed our DVD copying test in a quick-for-a-laptop 33 minutes. It has an Nvidia Geforce GT 525M graphics card with 1GB of its own memory, which helped it to reasonable performance for games. Newer games will need to be played with the detail levels turned down but for under £700 this laptop's games performance was not bad at all.(Panasonic Sv-av10-S Battery)
The 64-bit edition of the Windows 7 operating system is installed along with a few Toshiba programs, some of which were more useful than others. Toshiba Reeltime is a pointless file manager, while the hardware setup tool was much more helpful. It does include some useful Nero software for using discs and backing up, and Office 2010 Starter which contains cut-down spreadsheet and word processor programs.
It's 3D compatible, but only to a point – if you have 3D Blu-ray discs you can watch them using the L755, but not on its own screen. You have to plug in an HDMI cable to a 3D TV or projector. It doesn't include 3D glasses either.(Sony Np-fp50 Battery)
Network support is good, as it will connect to the fastest version of both wired and wireless networks and Bluetooth devices. It also has headphone and microphone sockets, a VGA socket for monitor connection. There are two USB sockets on one side, a single fast USB 3 socket on the other and an SD memory card reader under the front handrest.
Battery life was fair at around four hours in light use, though this will decrease when, say, watching a Blu-ray disc. In all, this is a good laptop for both working and home and entertainment, but it's a shame the 3D didn't live up to its billing.

From Solar Paint to Instant Battery Charge, Future Looks Great for Nanotechnology
According to experts at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), some of the technology innovations and devices that could make the biggest impact in our world are so small that millions of them could fit on the head of a pin.(Sony pcga-bp2nx battery)
These advancements in nanotechnology (the science of small things), are transforming the way researchers approach some of our greatest challenges.
How about solar cells embedded in paint to turn your house into one big solar panel? Or "quantum dots" that attack cancer, cell by cell, leaving healthy tissue untouched? Or Dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter batteries for mobile phones that charge in seconds instead of hours?
Nanotechnology is the area of engineering that involves working with materials or developing devices that are smaller than 100 nanometers (nm) in at least one dimension. That's about 1/1000 the width of the human hair. While most electronic technologies today use nanotechnology, many new applications take it to an extreme. Working at the atomic and molecular levels, also known as the quantum realm, even the mechanical, thermal and catalytic properties of materials can change.(Dell vostro 1400 battery)
According to Jo-Won Lee, IEEE member and chair professor at the Department of Convergence Nanoscience, Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, traditional manufacturing doesn't usually work at the nano-level but a better way is being developed. It's called self-assembly, which essentially means that the nanodevices build themselves, much like the way molecules form in nature to create larger systems.(Dell xps m170 ac adapter)
The IEEE and its members are playing a major role in making nanotechnology work in the real world. For example, the IEEE Nanotechnology Council advances and coordinates work in the field, including the theory, design and development of nanotechnology and its scientific, engineering and industrial applications.(Dell latitude d630 battery)
One of the highlights of the council's efforts this year is the 11th annual IEEE Nano 2011 Conference on 15-19 August 2011 at the Portland Marriott Waterfront Downtown in Portland, Oregon. International scientists and practitioners representing more than 20 IEEE societies will meet to collaborate on new areas of nanotechnology study, as well as to see nanotechnologies at work in both their own and related fields.(Sony vaio pcg-9231 battery)
Dr. Alexander Balandin, IEEE senior member, chair of the Materials Science and Engineering (MS&E) program at the University of California, Riverside and recipient of the IEEE Pioneer of Nanotechnology Award for 2011, offers an intriguing example. Research is currently underway to gain better control of the interaction between electrons and photons. If achieved, it would enable more efficient, less expensive photovoltaic (PV) cells, benefiting both existing solar applications and potentially a solar paint. This paint could be sprayed on structures and the resulting solar energy would totally change the dynamics of today's electric grid.
IEEE experts also believe the incremental gains made in recent years in dell inspiron 1545 battery performance can be dramatically accelerated with nanotechnologies. According to Dr. Joao Zuffo, IEEE life member and founder of the Laboratorio de Sistemas Integraveis at the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil, the potential exists to fully charge a smart phone or laptop in seconds, instead of an hour or more. In addition, nanomaterials such as graphene could improve HP pavilion dv6000 ac adapter battery capacity for electric vehicles (EVs) because of its high surface-to-volume ratio. This would make graphene more affordable and sustainable than fossil fuels.

Apple's Lion can tame the PC
Learning how to use a simple feature last week in Apple’s new Lion operating system became almost a Zen-like moment of enlightenment for an old dyed-in-the wool PC guy like me.(canon lp-e5 battery)
My Zen master/Mac instructor was showing me how to scroll up and down a page. On every Windows PC and on pre-Lion Macs, dragging the right hand scroll bar downwards with a mouse takes you naturally down the page.
“But this was unnatural,” he insisted.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because you are making a downward motion to see the text go up, he answered, and you are interacting indirectly with the content by using the scroll bar.”(sony np-bg1 battery)
A history lesson followed: when scrollbars were first used in Macs more than 25 years ago, it was partly because the machines were slow and it was taking time to render a whole document or picture as you inched your way down. Now, the whole thing is there in an instant, before you can even think of scrolling through it.
Using two fingers on the glass trackpad below the keyboard on the new MacBook Air, he showed me how to push up with my fingers to move the page up and reveal what was below it. Pushing down with two fingers, meanwhile, pushed that text out of sight and moved us to the top of the page again. When I tried it, I felt as if I was controlling a whole document with my fingers, even if I couldn’t see all of it.(Sony ccd-tr311e battery)
I could have quibbled with him that a trackpad is also indirect rather than natural – although it does mimic exactly what your fingers would do on a touchscreen – but the fact is, I soon got the hang of it. The habit of a PC lifetime had been broken and I had crossed some sort of line – Apple had convinced me that up was down and down was up.
With Lion, combined with the new Air, both introduced last week, Apple is turning things upside down in the computing world in general.(nikon en-el1 battery )
The Apps and touch gestures that have given it a lead in smartphones and tablets are now being extended to traditional computers. Where the vast majority of PC users were once unfamiliar with Apple’s Macs and operating system, anyone who has used an iPhone or an iPad will now find them that much easier to use.
The MacBook Air moved this Apple-led “post-PC” movement on considerably when it was revamped and relaunched last October. Its hardware borrowed features from the iPad – an instant-on and -off feature when the lid was open and closed, long hp pavilion dv2000 battery life including a 30-day standby feature, fast solid-state storage and a thin and light frame.
Steve Jobs was right when he described it as the future of notebooks – many Windows laptop makers have tried to emulate it and Intel is promoting a new category it calls Ultrabooks.
I thought the smaller 11.6-inch screen version of the Air was the best personal technology device I tested last yearand have been trying the 13.3-inch one with the latest improvements. The headline advance is the processor – Apple had lagged behind its rivals but the new models are up to 2.5 times faster than previous versions.
I had actually found the original Air fast enough for surfing the web and the limited video and photo editing I carried out, and would have preferred even longer toshiba pa3331u-1brs battery life this time. But this has stayed the same, at 5 hours for the 11.6-inch and 7 hours for the 13.3-inch, according to Apple’s estimates. So, I was disappointed to achieve only 3.5 hours on the 13-inch doing only surfing.
This is particularly important because the Air’s canon bp-511 battery is sealed and additional ones cannot be bolted on, unlike Sony’s Vaio Z, for example, where a toshiba satellite 4020cdt battery can be clipped to the bottom of the laptop for up to 16 hours of life.
The other new hardware additions are a Thunderbolt port for faster connectivity to a still limited number of peripheral devices and, more useful, an LED backlight for the keyboard, which comes on when an ambient light sensor notices it’s getting dark.
The new Lion software was the missing half of Apple’s Air aspirations and its features borrow again from the iPad and its iOS operating system – including an App Store, adding many more touch gestures, familiar screens full of apps, programs that run full-screen without any status bar, documents that elegantly autosave and resume exactly where you left off.(Sony dsr-200 battery)
The touch gestures can be difficult to grasp at first, but it is worth learning how to use them. I became enchanted with how I could sideswipe one-by-one through all of my full-screen apps running and, using the same trackpad gesture, swipe back through a history of all web pages opened in the Safari browser.
There are 250 new features in Lion and it can be downloaded for $US30 from the Mac App Store and shared with a whole household of Macs.(canon digital ixus 80 is charger )
For those of you still not seduced by Apple and its vision, Microsoft will introduce a touch- and tablet-influenced Windows 8 next year and perhaps, with its advances in table-top “surface” computers and its Kinect motion controller, it can still turn the tables on Apple. But, while that scrolling direction can easily be changed in Lion’s settings if you just cannot stand it, Apple’s momentum cannot be so readily reversed.

Lenovo Android tablet brings value, long battery life
Lenovo has finally entered the Android tablet market with the 10.1-inch IdeaPad K1, which mixes innovative UI enhancements and a useful selection of pre-loaded apps with a stylish, colorful design. With a $499 price for the 32GB version, this tablet is $100 less than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Apple iPad 2 with the same amount of storage. But is the IdeaPad K1 innovative enough to steer you away from better-known slates?(Acer Aspire 1410 Battery)
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
WHAT WE LIKE
Good value: Order from Lenovo and you get 32GB of storage for just $499, more than you’ll see on other tablets this price.
Major UI enhancements: From its home screen on down to its Android buttons, the IdeaPad K1 features some major improvements on the standard Honeycomb interface we've seen on all of its Android 3.1 competitors.(Motorola GP340 battery) These include a rustic default theme (which reminded us of an Andrew Wyeth painting), the Lenovo Launcher — a widget that allows you to launch your e-mail/ browser/eReader/media player, the ability to close apps from the layers menu, and the App Wheel — a rotatable widget with thumbnail shortcuts to your six favorite apps.(Sony a230 Charger)
Stylish design: With its matte, chrome-colored side and back trim and deep red back panel, the IdeaPad K1 is one of the most attractive tablets we've ever seen. The back panel also comes in white and dark gray, but we strongly recommend the snazzy red shade of our review unit.
Long battery life: The IdeaPad K1 lasted 8 hours and 3 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi. That compares very favorably to the tablet category average of 6 hours and 43 minutes and the Toshiba Thrive's 6-hour and 35-minute time, and it’s just a few minutes behind the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8:23).
Plenty of apps: The IdeaPad K1 includes more than 30 bundled apps. A lot of it is trialware, but some programs are available in full form and are quite useful. Among our favorites is the full Documents To Go 3.0, which allows you to not only view but edit Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, and PDFs while syncing with your PC or Google Docs. ArcSoft Movie Story allows you to trim videos and combine your clips with background music, transitions, and other special effects. ArcSync enables users to store 4GB of files in the cloud.(COMPAQ EVO N110 ac Adapter )
WHAT WE DON'T LIKE
Poor sound quality: Whether we were listening to music or trying to conduct an audio chat on Gtalk, the maximum speaker volume was way too low.
Inappropriate ads: By default, both the Lenovo Launcher and the Lenovo Social Touch nag you to purchase software, music, and movies. We were particularly shocked that the tablet kept recommending an explicit rap album from LMFAO, even though we’d done nothing to indicate an interest in this kind of music. Families should disable this feature right away.(Sony DCR-DVD306E Charger)
No haptic feedback, no Swype: The keyboard doesn’t come with a Swype option, and there’s no haptic feedback to make you feel like you’re using a physical keyboard. (Dell XPS M1330 Adapter)
VERDICT
Those looking for a slimmer Android slate should opt for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and bargain hunters should go for the $399 ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. However, if you're looking for a better interface than stock Honeycomb and want more storage for less money, the IdeaPad K1 is a pretty good deal.
